Come Out. You're Hiding.
Today, after what seemed like a century, flor released their debut album, Come Out. You're Hiding.
Everything about this album is magic. For their first label release, flor has managed to create something that is uniquely their own, unfazed by the cookie-cutter nature of the industry. CO.YH. is dripping with vulnerability and sincerity, they put their heart and soul into these 10 songs, something that is evident in every note.
Old favorites like Heart, Back Again, Unsaid and my ride or die, Warm Blood, have been reworked to be even more dynamic. I thought I could not love these songs any more but somehow even subtle changes made it feel like I was listening for the first time, rediscovering songs that have been my go-tos for the past year. The newer additions have exceeded even my expectations, they are a true outpouring of Zach's heart no holds barred, an invitation to see the world through his perspective. With the release of Guarded, Hold On, and Overbehind, we got small glimpses into the bigger picture, an upbeat introduction to a band that has truly gotten their footing. Full of confidence yet approachable, it's easy to love flor, especially when they're radiating positivity.
A definite standout is Spoiled, I even had to check multiple times throughout the song that it was actually flor. This song is a deviation from their typical sound, but man, is it perfect. A shift from their signature light and airy sound, Spoiled is more electronic and a somewhat darker song for a band that I often equate to golden retrievers and sunshine. The last minute of the song relies heavily on the production, definitely one of those songs that you just have to pull out your best Corey Feldman dance moves (if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up, it's absolutely necessary.)
At first listen, my favorite from the album as a whole, besides my aforementioned ride or die Warm Blood, is Restless Soul. When Zach sang it acoustically on the Feels Like Home tour, I knew it was special, so I could not wait to hear it in all its glory. Restless Soul was the first thing I listened to this morning, leading to me ugly crying in the car on the way to work (R.I.P. perfect cat eye liner). Do you ever hear a song and it's exactly what you need to hear? For me, this is 1000% it. God bless Zach Grace.
Come Out. You're Hiding. is brilliant. I may be just a little bit biased but it definitely gets my vote for album of the year.
here's the part where you skip to the bottom if you don't like sappy......
Zach, McKinley, Kyle, Dylan,
If I don't say it enough (i'm sure I do), I am endlessly proud of you. Thank you for always making me feel special even when there are much cooler people around to talk to. Thank you for the kindness, hugs, and laughs that have helped carry me through the hardest parts of my life. Thank you for buying into my crazy, and for being patient when it leads to me rambling about god knows what. Thank you for the little things like following me on twitter and laughing at my REALLY bad jokes, and the big things like reminding me that you love me just as much as I love y'all.
flor brought back my passion for music and reminded me why I want to help others find the soundtrack to their lives the way that you have made your way into mine. I can't wait for the rest of the world to see you shine the way that I have.
let's pour one out for Eye to Eye, may she rest in peace.
Love Always,
Marissa
