Pale Waves at Scoot Inn

This October, Pale Waves played the first show of their world tour in Austin, TX at Scoot Inn.

After the release of one of my favorite albums of not only the year, but of all time, My Mind Makes Noises, I was beyond excited to see Pale Waves perform it live.

For my third time seeing them, this would be the first time that I actually knew every song on the setlist (for the first shows they only had a few singles released), and, with it being the first show of the tour, I was eager to see which songs from the album they’d play.

It’s one thing to connect to an album when you’re home alone or driving in the car, but there’s something magical about hearing it live, getting to connect with the artist that put everything that I’ve felt as a 23 year old girl into music was the ultimate catharsis.

My love for lead singer Heather Baron-Gracie is endless, the way she pours her heart into every last second of the show is inspiring, and after getting the chance to talk to her after the show about the album, I am even more in awe of her talent and the way she makes everything seem so effortless (its strange to say I look up to someone who’s literally the same age as me, but it’s true, nonetheless).

Pale Waves have definitely become one of my favorite bands, in fact, I'll be hopping on a plane to LA in December to see them one more time before their tour with The 1975 next year.

Gallery: Maggie Rogers with Mallrat at Stubb's

On October 23rd, Maggie Rogers brought her North American tour to Austin, TX at Stubb’s.

Y’all. If you’re not listening to Maggie Rogers than what are you doing? I am beyond obsessed with the singles from her new album, Heard It In a Past Life, and seeing them live made me even more excited for its release in January.

Maggie Rogers has a voice that is effortlessly beautiful and authentic, when you’re watching her perform it almost feels like you’re watching a close friend, her energy is nothing but warm and inviting. My favorite part of the entire show was right at the beginning, after the first song, when she stopped everything for a minute to take in the crowd, her biggest yet, and was almost in tears with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen across her face- it was beyond amazing to witness someone having a moment like that, it lifted everyone in the audiences energy and her excitement carried on throughout the rest of the show.

If Maggie comes back to Austin, I will one hundred percent, without a doubt, be there.. and you should too!

Chase Atlantic in Texas

I had the opportunity to catch Chase Atlantic on their world tour in Austin and Dallas this October.

I had only seen Chase Atlantic twice before, but both times made a lasting impression, so I was very excited to catch them on their first ever headlining tour in Austin and Dallas.

First up was Austin at Stubb’s Jr.. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was taken by surprise when I saw who turned up at their show. For a band in their early twenties that play songs with overtly sexual references and glorify the use of heavy drugs, their fan base was very, very, young, in fact, much to my embarrassment, the doorman at Stubb’s told me that other than the parent chaperones, I was the oldest one he’d seen (I’m only 23). I understand the appeal of their looks, but still can’t grasp how literal children identify with their music, it made me almost uncomfortable to be there, especially because they were so fiercely dedicated to the band that they pushed and shoved and yelled their way to the show, something that’s inevitable with this kind of fan base.

Despite their not-so-friendly fans (ok before I go any further I would like to clarify that this is only my experience, I’m sure other CA fans are lovely), I was excited for the show and decided that on the balcony by all of the parents would be the best place to watch.

Their first opener, Riley, was a great start to the night, I really enjoyed everything that he performed, his set was simple, just him and a backing track, but it was enough to set the energy for the rest of the show.

After Riley came Cherry Pools. To be honest, my first impression was that they were trying a little too hard to emulate the vibe of bands like The Neighbourhood or The 1975, but, looking past that, they were actually a ton of fun. They continued the tone set by Riley, engaging the crowd and building up the energy.

When Chase Atlantic came on, all I could think about was how this venue was way, way, way too small for them. They tried their best to run around the tiny stage, but it was evident that their show was made for a room much bigger than the 200-cap Stubb’s Jr..

Lead Singer, Mitchel, was born to be on stage. His energy is undeniable, from start to finish he was bouncing around the stage, interacting with the audience, and not missing a beat of every song, even with a large group on such a small stage he managed to make everything larger than life.

The next night in Dallas was much the same, but luckily I had access to the side-stage area so that I could enjoy the show from the floor without having to worry too much about the fans that were a little aggressive with their devotion to this band.

Overall, I did enjoy these shows, but I have a feeling that their next tour, hopefully in bigger rooms, will be even better.

Gallery: Years & Years at Emo's

On October 20th, Years & Years brought their tour to Emo’s in Austin, TX with Cyn and Jess Kent.

To be completely honest, before this show, I had only heard a few Years & Years songs, but after this show I immediately made their albums staples in my playlists.

Jess Kent and CYN were the perfect openers for this tour, I danced and sang along and fell in love with their energy, excited to find two new artists that I really enjoy.

Years & Years put on one heck of a live show. Their stage design is brilliant, and lead singer Olly is beyond captivating, he turned Emo’s into one big party that I never wanted to leave.

flor at ACL Festival

This year I had the opportunity to work with one of my favorite bands at Austin City Limits Music Festival.

If you were to ask me right now what was the best day of my life, I would without a doubt tell you all about my day with flor at ACL.

For the last two years, I have been begging for flor to be on the ACL festival lineup, so this year when they finally were, I purchased my tickets the second they went on sale. I wanted to photograph this festival so badly, but getting a photo pass for ACL is nearly impossible, like winning the lottery or not stopping at Chick Fil A every day. But, out of the kindness of their hearts, flor allowed me to tag along and trusted me to be their photographer for the day.

It was incredible to work with these guys, but more than that, it made me feel like photography was really something that I could make a career, I couldn’t believe that I had been given such a huge opportunity, that I was good enough for it.

I will forever be grateful for this band, for treating me like family, and for giving me the chance to live my dream for one day.

Hopefully this is just the beginning.
